Regulators
Different regulators offer different levels of protection. These are the most common licences at international online casinos.
UK Gambling Commission — One of the strictest regulators in the world, with strong rules on player funds, advertising and safer gambling.
Malta Gaming Authority — The most common EU licence. Requires fair games, segregated player funds and a formal complaints process.
Spillemyndigheden (Denmark) — Denmark's regulator, with strict rules on bonuses, marketing and the ROFUS self-exclusion register.
iGaming Ontario / AGCO — Ontario's regulated market, with registered operators and strong player protection rules.
Gibraltar — A long-standing licence used by many established European operators.
Curaçao — Common at crypto casinos. Reformed in recent years, but player protection is still lighter than in the UK or EU.
Guide
Checking a casino takes less than five minutes, and it's the best protection you have. Here's exactly what to look for.
Scroll to the bottom of the casino's homepage. A licensed casino shows the regulator's name, its licence number and usually the regulator's logo. If you can't find this information, don't play there.
Copy the licence number into the regulator's public register on its official website. Check that the licence is active and that the domain you're visiting is listed. Fake licence logos are common on rogue sites.
Red flags. No licence information, withdrawal limits that aren't explained, bonus terms you can't find, pressure to deposit more, or support that stops replying when you ask about a withdrawal.
The site should use HTTPS (the padlock in your browser). Games should come from well-known studios and be tested by independent labs such as eCOGRA, iTech Labs or GLI.
A licence in one country doesn't mean a casino is allowed to accept players everywhere. Check that the casino is permitted in your country and follow your local laws.
Responsible casinos make deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion easy to find. These tools are a strong sign that the operator takes player protection seriously.
4 questions
How do I know if an online casino is licensed?
Look for the licence details in the footer of the casino's website, then check the licence number in the regulator's public register.
Which casino licence is the safest?
The UK Gambling Commission and the Malta Gaming Authority are generally seen as two of the strongest regulators, with strict rules on player funds and fair play.
Are Curaçao-licensed casinos safe?
Many are reputable, but Curaçao's rules give players less protection than UK or EU licences. Read reviews carefully and check withdrawal terms before depositing.
What should I do if a casino won't pay me?
Contact support and ask for a written explanation. If that fails, file a complaint with the regulator or its approved dispute service (ADR) listed in the casino's terms.
Gambling should be entertainment, never a way to make money or win back losses. Set limits before you play, and take a break if it stops being fun. Free, confidential help is available 24/7.
