How to get the best odds at blackjack

Rules that change the house edge, and basic strategy

Blackjack rules vary from table to table, and small differences change the house edge a lot. A good table pays 3:2 on blackjack, lets the dealer stand on soft 17 and allows doubling after a split.

Rules to look for

3:2 blackjack payouts (avoid 6:5 tables, which triple the house edge). Dealer stands on soft 17. Double on any two cards. Double after split allowed. Fewer decks is slightly better. Surrender, if offered, helps too.

Basic strategy

Basic strategy is a chart telling you the mathematically best play for every hand. Following it brings the house edge down to around 0.5%. It's legal, widely published and works in both RNG and live blackjack.

Live vs RNG blackjack

Live blackjack streams a real dealer and real cards; RNG blackjack is software. RNG tables let you play faster and at lower stakes; live tables feel more authentic and often have better rules.

Side bets

Perfect Pairs, 21+3 and similar side bets carry a much higher house edge than the main game. Treat them as entertainment, not value.

Blackjack bonuses rarely clear wagering, because table games count little towards it. Consider playing without a bonus.

Blackjack questions

4 questions

Can you count cards online?

Not effectively. RNG games shuffle every hand, and live tables use multi-deck shoes that are shuffled frequently.

What is the house edge in blackjack?

Around 0.5% with good rules and basic strategy, rising to 2% or more with poor rules or poor play.

Is live blackjack better than RNG blackjack?

Live tables often have better rules and a real dealer; RNG tables are faster and cheaper. Both are fair at licensed casinos.

Does blackjack count towards bonus wagering?

Usually only 5–10%, and sometimes not at all. Check the bonus terms.
