RTP and house edge explained

RTP tells you what a game pays back on average; house edge is the flip side. Here's how to read the numbers, which games have the best odds, and why the same slot can pay differently at different casinos.

Reading the numbers

RTP, house edge, volatility and the catch

RTP (return to player) is the percentage of all bets a game returns to players over the long run. A 96% RTP slot returns €96 of every €100 wagered, on average, over millions of spins. House edge is simply 100% minus RTP: 4%.

Long run means long run

RTP is measured over millions of rounds. In one session you can win far more or lose far more. RTP doesn't predict your next spin; it tells you the average cost of playing over time.

RTP by game

Blackjack (basic strategy). 99.5%
Baccarat (banker). 98.9%
French roulette (even bets). 98.65%
European roulette. 97.3%
Video poker (full pay). 99%+
Slots. 94–98%, most around 96%
American roulette. 94.7%

Why the same slot can differ

Many providers release slots in several RTP versions (for example 96.5%, 94.5%, 92.5%), and the casino picks which to run. Open the slot's info screen at your casino and check. A casino that consistently runs the low versions is cutting your odds.

Volatility

Two slots with 96% RTP can feel completely different. Low volatility pays small amounts often; high volatility pays rarely and big. Neither changes the long-run RTP.

Highest-RTP picks among common slots: Blood Suckers (~98%), Mega Joker high setting (~99%), Jackpot 6000 (~98.9%), 1429 Uncharted Seas (~98.5%). Check the version at your casino.
