Province rules, payments and the best sites for each need
Federal law, provincial regulation and the grey market, in plain English
Canada's Criminal Code leaves gambling to the provinces. Each province runs its own lottery-corporation site (PlayNow in BC, PlayAlberta, OLG in Ontario, Espacejeux in Quebec), and Ontario and Alberta have opened their markets to private operators under regulation.
Since April 2022, private operators registered with the AGCO and iGaming Ontario can serve Ontarians legally. Strict advertising rules apply: bonuses can't be advertised publicly, and only registered sites may be promoted to Ontario residents. Our Ontario page lists registered operators only.
Alberta launched its regulated market on 13 July 2026 with around two dozen operators registered with the AGLC and onboarded through the Alberta iGaming Corporation. The list is growing; see our Alberta page.
In BC, Quebec, Manitoba, the Prairies and Atlantic Canada, the provincial sites are the only locally regulated option, but it isn't illegal for individuals to play at internationally licensed casinos, and millions do. The casinos on this page hold licences from the MGA, UKGC, Kahnawake or Curaçao and accept Canadian players, Interac and CAD.
The legal age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. Recreational gambling winnings are not taxed in Canada.
Canada's rules differ by province. Ontario (since April 2022) and Alberta (since July 2026) run regulated markets where only registered operators may advertise, and bonus advertising is restricted. In other provinces, players commonly use internationally licensed casinos. Check your province's rules, and play only at licensed sites.
5 questions
Is online gambling legal in Canada?
Provincial lottery sites are legal everywhere. Ontario and Alberta also license private operators. In other provinces, playing at internationally licensed casinos is not a crime for the player, though the sites aren't locally regulated.
Which online casino is best in Canada?
Jackpot City and LeoVegas score highest for Canadian players overall. In Ontario, choose from registered operators such as bet365, LeoVegas, PlayOJO and Casumo.
Can I use Interac at online casinos?
Yes. Interac e-Transfer is accepted at most casinos serving Canada, including Jackpot City, Royal Panda, PlayOJO and LeoVegas.
Are casino winnings taxed in Canada?
No, not for recreational players. Professional gamblers are a rare exception.
What's the legal gambling age?
19 in most provinces; 18 in Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta.
Gambling should be entertainment, never a way to make money or win back losses. Set limits before you play, and take a break if it stops being fun. Free, confidential help is available 24/7.
