How to verify a casino licence

A licence logo in a footer proves nothing; anyone can paste an image. Verifying a licence takes two minutes on the regulator's own register. Here's how, regulator by regulator.

Step by step

Find it, check it, match it

Every serious regulator publishes a public register. If a casino's licence isn't on it, or the register entry doesn't list the domain you're on, treat the casino as unlicensed.

1. Find the licence details

Scroll to the footer. You should see the regulator's name, a licence or account number, and the licensed company's name. Clicking the regulator's seal should open the register entry.

2. Check the register

UK Gambling Commission: search the public register for the company. Malta Gaming Authority: the licensee register lists company, licence type and URLs. iGaming Ontario: the operator list. Curaçao: since the 2024 reform, the Curaçao Gaming Authority publishes licensees; older sub-licences are being phased out. Kahnawake: the Gaming Commission lists permit holders.

3. Match the domain and the company

The register entry must list the exact domain you're using and the company named in the footer. Mismatches are the most common sign of a copycat site.

4. Check the status

Licences can be suspended or surrendered. The register shows status; 'active' or 'approved' is what you want.

If any step fails, don't deposit. There are plenty of casinos with verifiable licences; see our safe and licensed casinos list.

Licence questions

4 questions

Can a casino fake a licence seal?

Yes, easily. Only the regulator's register proves a licence.

What if the domain isn't on the register?

The site may be a clone or an unlicensed mirror. Don't use it.

Is a Curaçao licence real?

Yes, but it offers less protection. Verify it on the Curaçao Gaming Authority site.

Do I need to check every time?

Once per casino, and again if the site changes domain.
