Sports betting in Canada

The law, the provinces and the leagues

Bill C-218 legalised single-game sports betting in August 2021. Each province decides how to offer it: through its lottery site, and in Ontario and Alberta through registered private sportsbooks.

Where to bet

Ontario: registered operators such as bet365, Betway and Unibet. Alberta: registered operators including bet365. Elsewhere: the provincial site (Proline+, PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu+) or international sportsbooks.

Canadian sports

NHL coverage is deep everywhere. Look for CFL markets, which smaller books skip, and for Canadian-specific props on the Leafs, Oilers, Raptors and Blue Jays.

Canada's rules differ by province. Ontario (since April 2022) and Alberta (since July 2026) run regulated markets where only registered operators may advertise, and bonus advertising is restricted. In other provinces, players commonly use internationally licensed casinos. Check your province's rules, and play only at licensed sites.
